The Vaphilia Guide to Steeping

Posted on August 19, 2016 by Paul McNamara

Steeping is the vaping world’s equivalent of leaving a good wine to age so the flavours mature. The goal of steeping is to improve the flavour of e juice by resting it for a period of time. Resting gives the alcohols and solvents that a chance to break down and enhance the natural fruit flavours of the juice whilst eliminating the harsh chemical taste that is sometimes apparent in fresh e liquids.  In this article, we run through the basics of resting e liquids to improve their flavour.

Steeping

Steeping, breathing and streathing

There are three key ways to rest e juice in order to improve its flavour and these are steeping, breathing and streathing. Steeping entails putting away your bottles in a cool dark place for one to two weeks, breathing is where you take the cap off the bottle and let it sit for a few hours (no more than 12 as after this, the nicotine content begins to diminish), and streathing is where the bottles are shaken, run under warm water, left to breathe in a cool dark place for a few hours, shaken again and then have the excess air squeezed from the bottle.

Maximise your results

Regardless of what e juice improvement process you’re undertaking, running the bottle under warm water and then vigorously shaking it are two ways to maximise the results. Running the bottle under warm water gets the molecules to move around and amalgamate faster, whilst shaking the bottle is a physical way of achieving the same thing.

Pick the right juice

Knowing which e liquids you need resting is not an exact science, but there are a few different factors you can use as a guide when buying.

  • Juices marketed as ‘premium’ products have been pre-steeped and this will generally be listed in the product description.
  • Juices containing nicotine should have a brownish red colour when they’re ready to use, so if you have clear e liquid containing nicotine, it probably needs to be steeped.

Let your tastebuds be your guide

Knowing which juices to rest and how long to rest them is all a matter of taste. If you get a new e juice and like the flavour, then use it straight away and don’t mess with a good thing. On the other hand, if you find the taste of your e juice harsh with strong overtones of alcohol or chemicals, then it’s worth experimenting with steeping, breathing or streathing.

Vaphilia stock an extensive range of quality e liquid brands which can be used straight away or steeped to suit your flavour preferences.

Top 4 E Cigarette Etiquette Tips

Posted on March 30, 2016 by Paul McNamara

E cigarettes are still a relatively new phenomenon and in many ways, culture, society and law is still catching up with this practice. To help new e cigarette users gain a better understanding of how to enjoy their hobby without being seen as a social pariah, we’ve come up with four simple etiquette guidelines to keep in mind when out and about with a personal vaporizer.

1. Pick your moment

There is a time and a place to enjoy your e cigarette and you need to learn when it’s okay to have a pull and when your mod is better left in your pocket. It’s completely fine to use an e cigarette in the privacy of your own home and normally it isn’t an issue outdoors where there aren’t too many people around, but think twice before vaping in a crowded area, in a friend’s home or in a private business, as your activity may come across as disrespectful and inconsiderate.

2. Don’t judge other vapers or lecture cigarette smokers

Once you’ve been vaping for a while, you’ll form your own opinions on the best devices to use and will probably also become more informed about the dangers of smoking. Although becoming better educated is a good thing, that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to vocalise your opinions about other peoples’ smoking habits. It’s completely fine to have your own opinions about what constitutes the best e cigarette experience, but unless someone asks you, it’s best to keep your opinions to yourself and refrain from making judgements about someone else’s personal choices.

3. Don’t vape where you can’t smoke

While it’s true that technically, vaping is not smoking and therefore it may be legal to vape in areas with a no smoking sign (depending on what state of Australia you are in), you’re not going to make any friends exploiting a loophole about exactly what you’re allowed to exhale in a certain area. Both smoking and vaping can make people feel uncomfortable and at the end of the day, it may be considered disrespectful to vape in an area where a prominently displayed ‘no smoking’ sign is present (it may even be prohibited if you are in a bar or restaurant which does not permit vaping).

4. If in doubt, just ask

Like every other facet of social etiquette, what is appropriate or inappropriate is dictated by context, so it’s always best to ask if you’re unsure about using your e cigarette in a certain area.

In New South Wales, South Australia, Northern Territory, ACT, Tasmania and Victoria electronic cigarettes haven’t been classified under any tobacco control laws, which means they are still considered a normal consumer product. Since vaping isn’t classed as smoking there’s no law against vaping in public in these states. If you go to a restaurant, pub, bar or café you should check with the business owners if they allow vaping in their establishment.

In Western Australia it is illegal to use e cigarettes anywhere smoking is prohibited. Meanwhile in Queensland the law dictates that vapers are restricted to using e cigarette devices containing nicotine-free e liquid. It’s a good idea to review the current vaping laws for your state or territory by contacting the relevant health agency

What is stealth vaping?

Posted on February 10, 2016 by Paul McNamara

With e cigarettes coming under so much scrutiny by the media and the government, vaping ‘anywhere, anytime’ is often not the best approach to use in public. Despite the fact that it is legal to vape in public spaces in most Australian states, you may find yourself in a situation where you wish to vape discreetly, so as not to attract unwanted attention. This is where “stealth vaping” is an extremely handy skill to have. Our post today address the issues related to vaping in public and we give you some easy-to-follow tips for stealthing like a ninja.

Why would you want to vape discreetly?

Firstly, I would like to start out by saying that Vaphilia does not condone vaping in places where electronic cigarettes are banned.

In New South Wales, South Australia, Northern Territory, ACT, Tasmania and Victoria electronic cigarettes haven’t been classified under any tobacco control laws, so they’re still a normal consumer product. Since vaping isn’t classed as smoking there’s no law against vaping in public in these states, so if you go to a restaurant, pub, bar or café you just need to check with the business owners if they allow vaping in their establishment (or go ahead and vape and see if they ask you to stop). In Western Australia it is illegal to use e cigarettes anywhere smoking is banned. Meanwhile in Queensland the law currently holds that vapers are restricted to using e cigarette devices containing nicotine-free e liquid. You should make yourself familiar with the current vaping laws for your state or territory by contacting the relevant health agency (for your state or territory).

Even though it may be legal to vape in a certain space or state, it may not be appreciated given the setting, atmosphere or even the event taking place.

Earlier this year Leonardo di Caprio nearly broke the internet when he was photographed vaping at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. DiCaprio won the award for Best Actor for his performance in the The Revenant but rather than receive praise for his achievement, Leo received a great deal of criticism in the media for shamelessly vaping with a small box mod. The ALA (American Lung Association) said that they were "deeply troubled" by Leonardo Di Caprio’s vaping.

If Di Caprio had engaged in a bit of stealth vaping he might not have caused such an uproar in the press and on social media. If you find yourself in an establishment or state where indoor vaping is permitted but you think that the people around you would be more comfortable without visible vapour, stealth vaping is a good compromise. We aren’t suggesting that you should feel ashamed to vape and hide in a corner with your e cigarette, but you may want to consider vaping in stealth mode in certain situations.

How to stealth vape like a ninja

Stealth vaping can’t be done properly with just any old vape setup. It’s important to have the right e cigarette device and accessories, and use the right technique to stealth vape successfully.

Here are 6 stealth vaping tips to help you vape like a ninja:

  1. Use a smaller e cigarette device and avoid low resistance atomizers

You may have a big box mod which is great for sub-ohming and producing big clouds. The problem with this kind of device it that it will attract a lot of attention from everyone around you when you use it to vape. If you want to practice stealth vaping invest in a smaller backup device with a small battery such as an eGo or iStick setup which you can use for vaping in public.

The iStick 20W from Eleaf is ideal for stealth vaping as it is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and produces less vapour compared to big sub ohm box mods.

  1. Hold you e cigarette discreetly

It is important to wrap your hand around your e cigarette so that the device is more or less hidden. If you are wearing a jumper or shirt you may be able to stick the device down your sleeve and have it partially covered. You can also cover the tip or light-up button when you vape to be even more discreet.

  1. Reduce voltage / wattage settings

Some small mods still have the ability to produce large clouds of vapour, so you should reduce the voltage / wattage settings on your device.

  1. Increase the PG content of your e-juice

Most e juices contain a mixture of Propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG) and flavour concentrates. Then, of course, nicotine can be added to your e juice.   PG is used to carry the flavour while VG basically has the effect of muting both flavour and throat hit, while producing more vapour. You can limit the amount of vapour your e cig produces by reducing the amount of VG in your e juice and increasing the amount of PG (A 100% PG blend results in the lowest vapour output).

  1. Hold the vapour in longer and exhale slowly

There are many different ways you can stealth vape, but most of these techniques are based on the same basic principle: if you hold the vapour in for longer, there will be less to exhale. Some vapers simply inhale and hold for roughly 3 to 4 seconds, while others take a few gulps of air after each draw and then hold before exhaling.

Another technique is to inhale, then swallow the vapour (twice if possible and inhale again if you can), then exhale through your nose. The slower you exhale, the more time your body has to absorb the vapour.

  1. Capture the vapour

A simple way to reduce the e cig vapour released is to discreetly exhale into your hand or place your hand in front of your mouth as if you’re coughing. Some people try to capture their vapour in a cup or sleeve, while others exhale through an item of clothing such as their shirt to help the vapour dissipate without being seen.

A Beginner’s Guide to Sub Ohm Vaping

Posted on September 11, 2015 by Paul McNamara

What is Sub Ohm Vaping?

Sub-ohm vaping, also referred to as ‘Sub-ohming’ is the practice of vaping on an e cigarette device whose atomizer coils possess a resistance level of less than one ohm. Anything higher than that is considered to be vaping at regular resistance.  Sub-ohming has become very popular amongst some advanced vapers and is currently quite a controversial trend in the Australian and global vaping community.

How does Sub-ohm vaping work?

All e cigarettes are powered by a battery. Sub-ohm vaping employs the principles of Ohm’s and Joule’s laws of electricity. What this means essentially is that a non-variable voltage source such as the battery in a mechanical mod will increase the overall power output of your e cig device when you reduce the resistance (ohms) of your coils.

Why do some vapers Sub Ohm?

There are three main reasons why vapers choose to sub-ohm. One benefit which appeals to Sub-ohmers is the ability to blow giant clouds. By utilising coil setup that produces a resistance level of less than one ohm you use much more battery power to spread heat over a larger surface area of e-juice. This means more vapour is produced with each puff and results in those mega clouds that you can witness at cloud chasing competitions.

Another reason why some vapers are attracted to sub-ohming is the warmth. The higher wattage creates extra heat and therefore warmer vapour. If you prefer a warmer vape then you will be likely to enjoy sub-ohm vaping.

Sub-ohm vaping also has the potential to release more flavour. Bigger clouds

of vapour means more intense flavour. This a common reason why many vapers start sub-ohming.

Sub-ohming safely

It is absolutely essential that Sub-ohm vaping is done safely and only by experienced vapers. If you do not follow the basic safety rules your battery of device could malfunction and cause injury or damage to your property. If you do follow our safety guidelines outlined here below sub-ohm vaping is quite safe.

  • The safest way to sub-ohm vape is to use a regulated mod such as the Joyetech eVic-VT.
  • If you choose to use a mechanical mod it is very important to clean your part of your mod regularly (including vent holes, threads, switch, and contacts) and pay extra attention to the spring in spring-loaded switches (replace the spring if it begins to feel soft or consider upgrading to magnets). You should also lock your mod when it’s not in use.
  • Please note: never use an unvented mod to sub-ohm vape! If you are selecting a mechanical mod for sub-ohm vaping you need to choose one that is well vented and has a low voltage drop (this means there is little loss of voltage when the electricity travels from your battery through your device to your coils).
  • Your batteries are one of the most crucial elements of ensuring safe sub-ohm vaping. You need to make sure you choose an authentic battery from a brand you trust. Our Sub Ohm Kits come with batteries specially designed for this type of vaping. If you are unsure about whether the batteries you are using are suitable you seek advice from a reputable vape shop like Vaphilia.

E-liquids and Nicotine

If like most sub-ohm vapers your aim is to create bigger clouds then you will want to opt for an e-liquid with more vegetable glycerine (VG) than propylene glycol (PG), as VG helps to create more vapour.

A lot of sub-ohm vapers inhale directly into their lungs. VG helps to reduce the throat hit. Due to the increased vapour pull into your lungs, it is a good idea to consider reducing the nicotine level of your ejuice to around 6mg/ml or less.

E Cigarette Starter Guide Part 4

Posted on September 02, 2015 by Paul McNamara

I am linking this article from Bernd Mayer PhD as it is excellent advice for any beginner. The last paragraph which is reproduced below is a must know for many beginners. I have come across quite a few of my customers that have experienced this problem, so take note and don't worry too much if this happens to you.

You can find the article here: http://www.bernd-mayer.com/how-to-switch-from-tobacco-to-electronic-cigarettes/

"In the first days you may experience a cough reflex due to increased airway resistance caused by stimulation of nicotinic receptors on sensory C-fibers of the bronchi, an effect that is masked by antitussive agents in tobacco. The coughing response ceases within a few days and should not seduce you to prematurely reduce the nicotine content of your liquid. Nicotine has no serious adverse effects, and there is no reason to anxiously reduce the amount of nicotine in your liquids."

5 Great Reasons to Stop Smoking and Start Vaping

Posted on September 02, 2015 by Paul McNamara

Here at Vaphilia, we know what it’s like to be a smoker and how hard it is to quit smoking analog (tobacco) cigarettes. There are lots of different methods which can be used effectively to quit smoking and each person has to find what works for them. Here are 5 reasons we love electronic cigarettes and are so glad we kicked smoking to the curb and became part of the vibrant vaping community.

1. No painful nicotine withdrawal

When you switch to e cigarettes you don’t have to struggle with the awful effects of a nicotine withdrawal as you are still satisfying your nicotine craving. You can reduce your nicotine intake if you wish but you won’t have to go through the potentially intense suffering which can result from going cold turkey. Another benefit of this is that people close to you also don’t have to deal with your irritable, snappy mood while you are making the transition.

2. No second hand smoke

Your partner, family, and colleagues will be happy to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with you now that they don’t have to be subjected to your second-hand smoke every time you light up. Your family or housemates at home will also be overjoyed that you won’t be stinking up the house, furniture and carpet with cigarette smoke.

3. You will smell great!

E cigs don’t have emit the offensive odour that is associated with traditional cigarettes. You may smell the sweet aromas of delightful e liquids such as Butterscotch and French Toast as you puff on your e cig but the scent won’t linger and that means no one else can be annoyed by your flavour choice or habit!

4. You won’t have to brave the outdoors in Winter

One of the worst things about being a smoker these days is that you have to constantly duck outside if you want to have a ciggy. This can be really inconvenient and alienating if you are out on a dinner date or if you are having a team lunch with your work mates. You can vape almost anywhere as e cigarettes don’t produce second hand smoke or off-putting smells. You will no longer have to brave the freezing cold or sweltering heat outside your office when you go for a smoke break or outside restaurants and bars when you go out with friends.

5. E cigarettes are more eco-friendly

Litter caused by cigarette butts and discarded cigarettes has a major negative impact on the environment. Cigarettes pollute the air and cigarette butts lying in our streets and gutters get washed into our waterways and end up posing a threat to our marine life. What’s more, every year nearly 600 million trees are cut down to provide fuel to dry tobacco. If you love green living, vaping offers a much more environmentally friendly alternative.

If you are still unsure whether it’s the right option for you, have a chat with our friendly staff – we will be happy to share our experiences with you and answer and burning questions you may have.

MECHANICAL MODS VS. VV/VW

Posted on August 11, 2015 by Paul McNamara

Are you an experienced vaper looking for the best e cigarette mods on the market? At Vaphilia, we have an impressive range of the most advanced and stylish mechanical and VV/VW mods available. Our mods are perfect for e-cigarette veterans looking for the best taste and vapour production possible.

WHAT ARE MODS?

When e cigarettes first arrived on the market some vapers began modifying them in order to improve their performance and battery life. Mod is short for modification and is used to describe both electronic cigarettes and other modified items such as modified atomisers. Mods come in all types of shapes and sizes.

MECHANICAL MODS

Mechanical mods are very basic personal vaporiser devices that have been modified to improve their performance but contain no electronic switches, regulators or chips.

VV/VW MODS

VV/VW stands for Variable Voltage/Variable Wattage and basically means that these kinds of mods allow you to control the voltage or wattage.

WHY CHOOSE ONE OR THE OTHER?

VV/VW Mods are generally easier for beginners as they come with built in safety features such as short circuit protection and overcharge protection. The most advanced mods also come with temperature control function you will find on theHeatvape Invader Mini 50W .

Heatvape Invader Mini 50w with Temp Control

Mechanical Mods don’t come with any built in safety features and require an understanding of battery safety. A good guide to battery safety can be found here: http://onvaping.com/battery-safety-and-ohms-law/

Despite their limitations Mechanical mods are still a favourite amongst vapers for their simplicity and aesthetic appeal.

One of the most compact and portable mods on the market is the SMPL Mod (logoless clone) from Wotofo . One of the things that makes this product so effective is that it is a hybrid connection mod, meaning that it has a direct battery to atomiser connection which minimises voltage drop. (Hybrid connections should ever be used sub ohm tanks that do not have a adjustable 510 connection – this includes most such tanks currently on the market). This sleek looking mechanical mod comes in both the Stainless Steel and Black models. If you are searching for a clean, short and easy-to-use mod, then this is the one for you.
