With e cigarettes coming under so much scrutiny by the media and the government, vaping ‘anywhere, anytime’ is often not the best approach to use in public. Despite the fact that it is legal to vape in public spaces in most Australian states, you may find yourself in a situation where you wish to vape discreetly, so as not to attract unwanted attention. This is where “stealth vaping” is an extremely handy skill to have. Our post today address the issues related to vaping in public and we give you some easy-to-follow tips for stealthing like a ninja.
Firstly, I would like to start out by saying that Vaphilia does not condone vaping in places where electronic cigarettes are banned.
In New South Wales, South Australia, Northern Territory, ACT, Tasmania and Victoria electronic cigarettes haven’t been classified under any tobacco control laws, so they’re still a normal consumer product. Since vaping isn’t classed as smoking there’s no law against vaping in public in these states, so if you go to a restaurant, pub, bar or café you just need to check with the business owners if they allow vaping in their establishment (or go ahead and vape and see if they ask you to stop). In Western Australia it is illegal to use e cigarettes anywhere smoking is banned. Meanwhile in Queensland the law currently holds that vapers are restricted to using e cigarette devices containing nicotine-free e liquid. You should make yourself familiar with the current vaping laws for your state or territory by contacting the relevant health agency (for your state or territory).
Even though it may be legal to vape in a certain space or state, it may not be appreciated given the setting, atmosphere or even the event taking place.

Earlier this year Leonardo di Caprio nearly broke the internet when he was photographed vaping at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. DiCaprio won the award for Best Actor for his performance in the The Revenant but rather than receive praise for his achievement, Leo received a great deal of criticism in the media for shamelessly vaping with a small box mod. The ALA (American Lung Association) said that they were "deeply troubled" by Leonardo Di Caprio’s vaping.
If Di Caprio had engaged in a bit of stealth vaping he might not have caused such an uproar in the press and on social media. If you find yourself in an establishment or state where indoor vaping is permitted but you think that the people around you would be more comfortable without visible vapour, stealth vaping is a good compromise. We aren’t suggesting that you should feel ashamed to vape and hide in a corner with your e cigarette, but you may want to consider vaping in stealth mode in certain situations.
Stealth vaping can’t be done properly with just any old vape setup. It’s important to have the right e cigarette device and accessories, and use the right technique to stealth vape successfully.
Here are 6 stealth vaping tips to help you vape like a ninja:
You may have a big box mod which is great for sub-ohming and producing big clouds. The problem with this kind of device it that it will attract a lot of attention from everyone around you when you use it to vape. If you want to practice stealth vaping invest in a smaller backup device with a small battery such as an eGo or iStick setup which you can use for vaping in public.
The iStick 20W from Eleaf is ideal for stealth vaping as it is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and produces less vapour compared to big sub ohm box mods.

It is important to wrap your hand around your e cigarette so that the device is more or less hidden. If you are wearing a jumper or shirt you may be able to stick the device down your sleeve and have it partially covered. You can also cover the tip or light-up button when you vape to be even more discreet.
Some small mods still have the ability to produce large clouds of vapour, so you should reduce the voltage / wattage settings on your device.
Most e juices contain a mixture of Propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG) and flavour concentrates. Then, of course, nicotine can be added to your e juice. PG is used to carry the flavour while VG basically has the effect of muting both flavour and throat hit, while producing more vapour. You can limit the amount of vapour your e cig produces by reducing the amount of VG in your e juice and increasing the amount of PG (A 100% PG blend results in the lowest vapour output).
There are many different ways you can stealth vape, but most of these techniques are based on the same basic principle: if you hold the vapour in for longer, there will be less to exhale. Some vapers simply inhale and hold for roughly 3 to 4 seconds, while others take a few gulps of air after each draw and then hold before exhaling.
Another technique is to inhale, then swallow the vapour (twice if possible and inhale again if you can), then exhale through your nose. The slower you exhale, the more time your body has to absorb the vapour.
A simple way to reduce the e cig vapour released is to discreetly exhale into your hand or place your hand in front of your mouth as if you’re coughing. Some people try to capture their vapour in a cup or sleeve, while others exhale through an item of clothing such as their shirt to help the vapour dissipate without being seen.
