A Beginner’s Guide to Sub Ohm Vaping

What is Sub Ohm Vaping?

Sub-ohm vaping, also referred to as ‘Sub-ohming’ is the practice of vaping on an e cigarette device whose atomizer coils possess a resistance level of less than one ohm. Anything higher than that is considered to be vaping at regular resistance.  Sub-ohming has become very popular amongst some advanced vapers and is currently quite a controversial trend in the Australian and global vaping community.

How does Sub-ohm vaping work?

All e cigarettes are powered by a battery. Sub-ohm vaping employs the principles of Ohm’s and Joule’s laws of electricity. What this means essentially is that a non-variable voltage source such as the battery in a mechanical mod will increase the overall power output of your e cig device when you reduce the resistance (ohms) of your coils.

Why do some vapers Sub Ohm?

There are three main reasons why vapers choose to sub-ohm. One benefit which appeals to Sub-ohmers is the ability to blow giant clouds. By utilising coil setup that produces a resistance level of less than one ohm you use much more battery power to spread heat over a larger surface area of e-juice. This means more vapour is produced with each puff and results in those mega clouds that you can witness at cloud chasing competitions.

Another reason why some vapers are attracted to sub-ohming is the warmth. The higher wattage creates extra heat and therefore warmer vapour. If you prefer a warmer vape then you will be likely to enjoy sub-ohm vaping.

Sub-ohm vaping also has the potential to release more flavour. Bigger clouds

of vapour means more intense flavour. This a common reason why many vapers start sub-ohming.

Sub-ohming safely

It is absolutely essential that Sub-ohm vaping is done safely and only by experienced vapers. If you do not follow the basic safety rules your battery of device could malfunction and cause injury or damage to your property. If you do follow our safety guidelines outlined here below sub-ohm vaping is quite safe.

  • The safest way to sub-ohm vape is to use a regulated mod such as the Joyetech eVic-VT.
  • If you choose to use a mechanical mod it is very important to clean your part of your mod regularly (including vent holes, threads, switch, and contacts) and pay extra attention to the spring in spring-loaded switches (replace the spring if it begins to feel soft or consider upgrading to magnets). You should also lock your mod when it’s not in use.
  • Please note: never use an unvented mod to sub-ohm vape! If you are selecting a mechanical mod for sub-ohm vaping you need to choose one that is well vented and has a low voltage drop (this means there is little loss of voltage when the electricity travels from your battery through your device to your coils).
  • Your batteries are one of the most crucial elements of ensuring safe sub-ohm vaping. You need to make sure you choose an authentic battery from a brand you trust. Our Sub Ohm Kits come with batteries specially designed for this type of vaping. If you are unsure about whether the batteries you are using are suitable you seek advice from a reputable vape shop like Vaphilia.

E-liquids and Nicotine

If like most sub-ohm vapers your aim is to create bigger clouds then you will want to opt for an e-liquid with more vegetable glycerine (VG) than propylene glycol (PG), as VG helps to create more vapour.

A lot of sub-ohm vapers inhale directly into their lungs. VG helps to reduce the throat hit. Due to the increased vapour pull into your lungs, it is a good idea to consider reducing the nicotine level of your ejuice to around 6mg/ml or less.
