5 COMMON MYTHS ABOUT VAPING DEBUNKED

Posted on August 11, 2015 by Paul McNamara

MYTH #1: E-CIGARETTES CONTAIN ANTI-FREEZE.

Most e-liquids contain propylene glycol, an ingredient which is sometimes found in anti-freeze. While propylene glycol is sometimes used in anti-freeze, it is actually an additive which is intended to make the substance less harmful in the case that it is accidentally swallowed. In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Department (FDA) claimed that they had found the toxic component of anti-freeze – diethylene glycol – in e cigarettes. What wasn’t revealed is that it was found in trace amounts on a single sample that was well below the level that could cause harm. Most likely, it was a contaminant in the manufacturing process. It has never been found in any e cigarette since, despite thousands of subsequent tests. Anti-freeze is NOT used in e cigarettes. Our e-liquids contain Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerine and flavour concentrates. Propylene glycol has been approved by the FDA and the EU as safe for human consumption.

MYTH #2: VENDORS OF ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES OFFER SWEET E LIQUID FLAVOURS AND COLOURFUL PACKAGING IN ORDER TO ATTRACT YOUNG PEOPLE.

This myth is derived from the assumption by e cigarette critics that the flashy ads and decadent flavours appeal primarily to adolescents. The people making this assumption lack an understanding of the target consumer of electronic cigarettes and the key purpose of the product. Many products which are intended for adult use offer a variety of fruity and dessert-related flavours. Our preference for flavour is not an age-specific thing and is expressed by people world-wide in our purchasing habits across a range of different kinds of products. From liquer-filled chocolates to lip balm, flavour preference is often one of the key factors that influences our purchasing decision. Vaphilia’s range of e-liquids are selected to accommodate the variety of flavours which appeal to adults including fruit flavours, beverage flavours, and even tobacco flavours, just to name a few.

MYTH #3: VAPING IS A GATEWAY TO TOBACCO SMOKING.

People start smoking for a variety of different reasons. Studies suggest that children and young adults are more likely to be influenced by their parents, peers and stress in their life than e liquid flavours and advertising.

The reality is that smoking is more likely to be a gateway to e cigarettes as ex-smokers move onto vaping as an alternative to traditional cigarettes.

MYTH #4: SECOND HAND VAPOUR IS DANGEROUS TO BYSTANDERS

Smoking is not just damaging to the smoker’s health but also the people around them. But there is a big difference between smoking and vaping. Exhaled vapour from electronic cigarettes is different to tobacco smoke and dissipates in the air very quickly. The danger for second-hand vapours is negligible .

MYTH #5: NICOTINE CAUSES CANCER

It is not the nicotine in traditional cigarettes that causes cancer. It is the tar created when tobacco and its preservatives are burnt which have carcinogenic effects. The tar contains thousands of toxic chemicals including many known carcinogens. Vaphilia’s products do not contain nicotine as it is illegal to sell or supply nicotine in Australia.
